Chennai has been has been battered once again by cyclones and heavy rainfall over the last couple of days!! This storm is forecasted to be worse than the previous one which left 169 dead and over 60000 homeless. We have requested our Honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi to visit the flood affected victims of Tamilnadu. He is considering our request. As you are all aware by now, the previous series of rains were already billed as the worst natural disaster to hit Chennai since the Tragic Tsunami in 2004. Unfortunately, the weather has not shown any signs of improvement. The tireless work of 250 passionate volunteers of our organization has not only been noticed by your good self but has also been appreciated by the media and the public. We have initiated our rescue and relief operations once again in the severely affected areas. At this time of great suffering, we besiege you!! Your timely act of generosity at this moment of misery and mourning will save many innocent souls who are struggling to survive. We would once again greatly appreciate it if you could support us directly or through your well-wishers & networks to donate some blankets, old clothes, rice, dal, sugar, milk powder, first-aid kits and food packets to those who are left helpless. As you already know, we do not want any monetary aid. Volunteers of Agni Foundations will be at your doorstep to collect your generous proceeds as we have been for the last 10 days. On behalf of the 60,000 victims who have been affected, may I please encourage you to consider our social call.
Our Coordinators: Mr.Vijay @9445024084 and Shyam Kumar @9445024409 are waiting for your calls. Attached are a few files for your reference. The yeoman service that was achieved is only because of the noble citizens and responsible samatarians of our country and such as yourself!!

Letter to the Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi

An Article About the Flood

As you all know over the past week, Chennai has been rocked by the worst natural disaster since 2004 when the Tragic Tsunami decimated the city. The cyclone coupled with heavy rainfall has brought the city to a standstill. Over 200 people are dead and several thousands are reported missing. Nevertheless, Chennai has responded incredibly over the last couple of days and normalcy doesn't seem too far off. Dozens of NGO'S have stepped forward in an effort to serve the distressed by providing basic needs such as food, water and clothes. One such Organization is the Agni Foundation. Founded by Tamil Nadu's only Asian gold medalist in swimming - Agnishwar Jayaprakash in 2014, this group of 25 core members and 150 volunteers have been submerged in the rescue and relief operations in the city for the last one week. The Founder & Director, who has been heading the group's operations on ground expressed his grief over help not being provided to the orphanages and the old age homes. "There are still more than 50,000 people homeless. The relief camps set up in government schools and community halls by the Government have been sheltering most of these victims. However, the souls at the orphanages and homes are still stuck. They prefer to stay at the comfort of their homes even if they are water logged as compared to fighting for food at these temporary shelter homes where only the fittest survive!!" expressed Agnishwar. He explained how his team of volunteers have been working tirelessly night and day relaying across food, clothes and emergency medicines to the orphanages. It is indeed very heart-warming to know that volunteers from across continents have answered Chennai's calling. Valentina Gonzalez from Chile has been helping serve food and distribute clothing for the victims for the pastweek. She has even written to many universities and governments from South America to extend a helping hand to the affected parties here in Chennai.

A unique form of service that the volunteers have mastered is felicitating the pickup of proceeds from the comfort of the donor's doorstep which has made helping much less complicated. "The police and corporation officials have cordoned off the affected areas to prevent further chaos so it will be difficult for socially driven to directly impact the victims" said Jayanth, a teenage volunteer of the Agni Foundation. He further explained how socially inclined citizens have staged a united front in helping the victims by turning out in the hundreds. This group started out by creating awareness for deserving orphanages and struggling special homes by empowering the orphanages with a presence online. "It was an initiative that drew inspiration from the Digital India campaign incepted by the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. Designing and hosting a website free of cost was the first step to financial independence for these NGOs. Many of these homes serve huge segments of our special community, but are struggling to stay afloat due to lack of awareness and access to funds from the socially inclined society" said Agnishwar. Over the last year this amazing group of youth has served more than 120 deserving NGO's across Tamil Nadu. Their true sense of achievement however is how they have been one of the many socially driven youth organization's to answer Chennai's cry for help in the time of disaster!! Agni Foundation do not collect cash in any form, so please feel free to lighten your homes of any old clothes, blankets, food packets, clean water and emergency medicines that will help the victims of this calamity. To help or volunteer, please contact the coordinator Mr.Vijayakumar at 9445024084 / 9551687602 or visit the Agni Foundation official Web page at www.agnifoundation.org which is updated every few hours with the current scenario on ground. Please do your bit as Chennai needs You!!

Chennai Floods

The 2015 South Indian floods resulted from heavy rainfall during the annual northeast monsoon in November–December 2015.

They affected the Coromandel Coast region of the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and the union territory of Puducherry, with Tamil Nadu and the city of Chennai particularly hard-hit. More than 400 people were killed and over 18 lakh people were displaced. With estimates of damages and losses ranging from over Rs.20000 crore (US$3 billion) to Rs.100000 crore (US$15 billion), the floods are the costliest to have occurred in 2015, and are among the costliest natural disasters of the year. The flooding has been attributed to the El Niño phenomenon.

Please help us!!

Dear All,

Firstly, please forgive me If my team of volunteers or myself haven't been able to rescue or reach relief supplies to you or the ones who you had personally requested. It was a very hectic day of service with very poor network facilities. 10000 food packets were served today by the service minded and passionate youth volunteers at the Agni Foundations. 184 families have been evacuated across 40 different locations. Credits to several donors who provided the meals. The rains have subsided for now, but the situation is very criticial in Kotturpuram, alwarpet, thambaram, nandhanam, velachery, saidapet, Anna Nagar. Many areas are bad but improving. Several lakes and rivers are overflowing. The water is flowing back into the streets as the the drain system are clogged. 250 Foundations volunteers and myself have been working tirelessly day and night to help those who are severly affected. We are not only providing food but also places to stay across chennai. Many of the places are inaccessible and dangerous. We haven't been able to rescue all those who requested but we are still trying our best. Tommorow we will be renting a couple of boats to reach relief supplies to the affected. Hopefully, that will enable us to optimise our operations. Network has been down and internet is very hard to access. Many roads are inaccessible and dangerous. We haven't been able to rescue all those who requested but we are still trying our best. Right now I would sincerely request all of you to stay indoors. Please stock rations and use water very conservatively. Please help us connect with the national news agencies such as Times Now, NDTV and CNN-IBN to help streamline our rescue and relief operations in the coming days. We have volunteers across the city who can not only offer food but also a place to stay. Thank you kindly for your support and encouragement. For emergencies please ask those in trouble to call 9500088664 or 9445024084

The Future

It is more than a month now, since Chennai was devastated, and yet Chennai is to be healed. While everybody has existed the scene of destruction after the rescue and relief operations, We at Agni Foundation are still at work. In association with Corporates and Individuals, we are working a solution to rehabilitate the displaced. Supplying of relief materials like clothes, blankets and rice would have taken care of their immediate needs. It is time now, to restore their self-respect and confidence to restart the life. We have taken it upon ourselves and feel it is our responsibility to rehabilitate them. In this endeavor, we are seeking kind hearted individuals and corporates to join hands with us and erase the marks of destruction left by the Chennai Floods in the lives of innocent souls.
